Connect Gusto Without Constraints

IntelliPaaS seamlessly connects Gusto with your core business systems, enabling no-code integration for payroll reporting, headcount data and labour cost analysis across cloud, on-prem and hybrid environments.

Gusto's MCP server sits at mcp.api.gusto.com and is admin-only: you need primary or global admin permissions in Gusto to connect at all, and the scope of what is shared is chosen during the connection flow. Coverage spans company and location details, employees and contractors, jobs, roles and compensation, payroll history with totals and pay breakdowns, and timesheets. It supports both reading and taking action, though the most consequential action — running payroll — is still limited to a subset of customers, and Gusto's own guidance is to require manual confirmation for every tool call. Worth not confusing with Gusto's Embedded Dev Assistant server, which searches documentation and never touches live payroll. Connecting Gusto to IntelliPaaS keeps headcount and labour cost data current in the systems that plan around it.

Gusto integration capabilities

  • Read company and location information.
  • Read employee and contractor records.
  • Access jobs, roles and compensation detail.
  • Retrieve payroll history, totals and pay breakdowns.
  • Read timesheets and hours worked.
  • Take write actions where enabled, under admin-only access and manual confirmation.

These capabilities move payroll and people data into the systems that budget, report and plan on it, without anyone exporting a payroll register. IntelliPaaS handles field mapping, currency handling and data type transformation automatically.

Common integration scenarios

  • Post payroll journals into QuickBooks, Xero or NetSuite after each run.
  • Sync employee, job and compensation records with BambooHR, Personio or Workday.
  • Load labour cost by department and cost centre into Power BI or Snowflake.
  • Create Gusto records automatically when a candidate is hired in Greenhouse or Workable.
  • Reconcile timesheet hours against project or scheduling systems.

These scenarios address the most common friction in payroll operations — journals keyed by hand, headcount reported from a spreadsheet, benefits and HR systems drifting apart — by automating the flows between Gusto and the platforms around it.

Deployment & security

Flexible deployment is essential for organisations operating in regulated industries or jurisdictions with strict data residency requirements. IntelliPaaS supports private cloud and on-premise deployments with full regional data sovereignty, which matters especially for payroll data, and Gusto publishes a single global MCP endpoint. All deployment modes receive the same feature set, connector library and support tier, with no capability trade-offs based on deployment choice.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

What authentication does the connector use?

OAuth 2, and only payroll admins can connect — primary or global admin permissions in Gusto are required. The data shared is limited during the connection process itself.

Can it run payroll?

Some advanced actions including running payroll are available to a limited set of customers rather than to every account. Gusto's own guidance is to require manual confirmation for all tool use, which IntelliPaaS supports through approval steps.

Is this the same as Gusto's developer documentation server?

No. Gusto also runs an Embedded Dev Assistant MCP server that searches API references and documentation. It is read-only and never touches live payroll data — a different server for a different purpose.

Can I deploy on-premise or in a private cloud?

Yes. Cloud (SaaS), private cloud in your own VPC, and fully on-premise or air-gapped deployments are all supported, with full feature parity across every mode.

Is my data secure?

Data is encrypted in transit and at rest, and IntelliPaaS is GDPR-ready. Access is admin-only and scoped at connection time, and on-prem modes keep payroll data inside your own infrastructure boundary.
