Connect Grafana Without Constraints

Grafana ships two first-party servers and the difference decides your architecture. Grafana Cloud's hosted service at mcp.grafana.com is generally available, Streamable HTTP only, and uses OAuth 2.1 scoped by Grafana RBAC — read access is always granted and write access requires explicit consent at authorization time. It does not support self-hosted Grafana. The open source server is a binary you run yourself, works with Grafana 9 and later over stdio or HTTP, authenticates with a service account token, and is the right answer for residency-constrained estates. The open source build also ships the cleanest safety switch in the category: a flag that disables every mutating tool outright, plus several tool categories disabled by default to conserve context. Sixty or more tools cover search, dashboards, datasource queries across Prometheus, Loki, Tempo and more, alerting, annotations, incidents and on-call.

What authentication does the connector use?

Grafana Cloud uses OAuth 2.1 scoped by Grafana RBAC, with read access always granted and write access requiring explicit consent at authorization time. The open source server uses a Grafana service account token, with per-tool RBAC applied.

Does the hosted service work with self-hosted Grafana?

No. The Grafana Cloud service supports Grafana Cloud only. Self-hosted estates use the open source server, which IntelliPaaS runs in whichever deployment mode you use — it needs Grafana 9 or later.

How do I keep it read-only?

On the open source server, a disable-write flag blocks every mutating tool, and several tool categories are disabled by default to conserve context. On Grafana Cloud, simply decline write consent at authorization.

Can I deploy on-premise or in a private cloud?

Yes, and this connector is a particularly good fit for it. Cloud (SaaS), private cloud in your own VPC, and fully on-premise or air-gapped deployments are all supported, with full feature parity across every mode.

Is my data secure?
